The Urban Studies in Practice presentation for Wed. March 11th) has been cancelled to the public as a COVID-19 precautions. UW Tacoma students will receive electronic material from their professor. Thank you for your understanding and support.

The U.S. Constitution’s Fifth Amendment, as currently written, prevents the government from creating the type of public housing policies we need to fully address the current widespread housing affordability crisis. A part of this amendment, the Takings Clause, which limits the power of eminent domain, applies a restrictive definition of public use. This definition disregards the social function of property (SFP) as a rationale for the repurposing of property. SFP is a legal principle currently used in Brazil. The presenters will define SFP and describe how it is applied.
