TURB 103 URBAN STUDIES IN PRACTICE - Hope St. John, PhD student, Cultural Anthropology, UW Seattle, “Framing the Present: Urban Space, Photography, and Historical Narrative in Qingdao, China”
WhenWednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, 12:30 – 1:25 p.m.
Description

Based on research in Qingdao, China, this talk explores how photography in and of the urban built environment functions as a generative act entangled in the production of personal, national, and historical narratives. Taking photography in Qingdao as an example, it argues that such highly localized practices must be understood within the context of larger discursive negotiations concerning Chinese urbanism, such as global status, national identity, and belonging.
