Annual Ramadan Iftar by the Muslim Student Association

The Muslim Student Association at the University of Washington Tacoma invites you to join us for community dialogue and Iftar (breaking the fast) during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. The Ramadan Iftar is an important component to bring people together gathered around food and an open space for dialogue, a bridge building and a wide learning perspective. This year, our Annual Ramadan Iftar will be centered around Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.), an exemplary leader, the importance of his life and how he has influenced others. The speakers will be joining us for a presentation and discussion panel about Early Islam, the life of Prophet Muhammad (S), and the significance of its immediate aftermath as well as what does Ramadan mean for individuals. There will be a Q&A session - so bring your questions. The keynote speakers are Lesley Hazleton: an author and writer who has spoken at numerous TED talks concerning her research and books regarding Prophet Muhammad’s life. As an agnostic Jew, Hazelton delivers her insights from a secular point of view. Dr. Hamza Zafer: an assistant professor of early Islam and Classical Arabic, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and Comparative Religion / Jewish Studies at UW seattle. His passion for textural studies inspired him to learn the many languages he speaks including: Advanced Classical Arabic; Aramaic and Syriac; Biblical and Mishnaic Hebrew; Ethiopic (Ge′ez); Persian; Koine Greek, Judeo-Arabic and Judeo-Persian. Advanced Modern French, Persian, Urdu-Hindi and Punjabi. And, reading Knowledge of Sanskrit, German, Coptic and Sindhi. Varisha Khan, a UW Seattle alumni, journalist and activist who advocates for Muslim rights and black lives matter. She’s currently running for Redmond city council. Mohammad Mousa, CFO of Greater Tacoma Community Foundation and principal of the Islamic Center of Tacoma Arabic School. The discussion panel will be facilities by are very own Dr. Turan Kayaoglu a professor here at the UWT and vice chancellor for research.
