The UW Tacoma Legal Pathways Program is launching an Annual Symposium about the role and importance of the rule of law in society. Our inaugural discussion focuses on the value of a free press in protecting the rule of law in the United States. David Zeeck, who served as publisher of The News Tribune for 14 years, will moderate a conversation with Marty Baron, executive editor of The Washington Post. Our relatively short history contains many examples of what can happen when there are threats to the fundamental American value of free speech, and the role of an independent press in shining a light of transparency about complex, and sometimes opaque, institutions and practices. Attacks on journalists, censorship, and misuses of institutional power -- from Watergate and the Pentagon Papers, to voter suppression and abuse by Catholic priests -- demonstrate the challenges for the rule of law and the important role of the media in countering ignorance and fostering accountability.
