Math (Ethusiast) Talk: What's Right About Math?
Math (Ethusiast) Talk: What's Right About Math?
WhenTuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, 4:05 – 5:05 p.m.

Taylor Blue, a Mount Rainier High School teacher, will be giving a talk on What's Right About Math.

Knowing the answer without seeing & understanding how it came to be is like watching the scene where Darth Vader tells Luke Skywalker that he’s his father on YouTube; all of the context and build up has been completely left out! Far too often, math education emphasizes the importance of getting the right answer, which is done through lots & lots of practice, but the process—and the potential to make the process to be creative, visual, and open—is left behind. How can teachers make math education more creative, open, visual & therefore more meaningful for students? Strategies can start as early as Pre-K & can continue through high levels of mathematics.
