Description | Maxine Savage's dissertation, "North Adjacent: Race, Sex, and the Spatiotemporality of Borealism" resists exoticizing discourses of the Arctic and sub-Arctic North that undergird conceptions of the Nordic as always already white, normatively masculine, and heterosexual. In examining the "North," Maxine considers the reach of this racializing, gendering, and sexualizing force in contemporary sites of former and ongoing Nordic colonization. In this colloquium, Maxine will present on their chapter "Sodomitical Sovereignty; Iceland's (Post)Colonial Behind" which explores in/human racialized desire in cinematic and literary texts that orbit Iceland’s sovereignty from Denmark. Examining scenes of anal intercourse between flesh, stone, and metal, they work to destabilize historical narratives of Iceland’s sovereignty. |
