A Minoritarian Performance Research Cluster colloquium. The Spring 2024 Minoritarian Performance Research Cluster colloquium will stage a conversation between Stefka Mihaylova and Eric Villiers. Mihaylova’s remarks will draw from her monograph, Viewers in Distress: Race, Gender, Religion, and Avant-Garde Performance at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century (2023), which examines the viewing practices of rebellious spectators who challenged the established conventions of theatre decorum. Villiers will discuss practices of queer curation. Moderated by Amna Farooqi. Stefka Mihaylova is Associate Professor of Theatre History and Performance Theory at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her book recent book is Viewers in Distress: Race, Gender, Religion, and Avant-Garde Performance at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century (2023). She is also the coeditor of Uncle Tom’s Cabins: The Transnational History of America’s Most Mutable Book (2018). Eric Villiers is an artist, curator, and a PhD Candidate in Theatre History and Performance. Villiers’ research brings together museum studies, queer studies, and performance studies to critically engage with contemporary curatorial practices of displaying queer art and the ways in which this work performatively operates within museum environments. |
