Description

This year's theme: DIS (PLACE): THIS PLACE
"(Dis)Place"plays off of "dis" as slang for "this," which really democratizes the academic space and highlights the need for more inclusive ways of thought, particularly if these forms of thought are not formally credentialed or recognized by an academic institution. It also highlights how important places are to indigenous groups. We have origin stories rooted in a specific place as having started a way of thinking, where our ancestors come from and are now, a tradition for how things are done now, or even a custom of sharing (as in resources) with other people recognized in the area. It lends peer-to-peer recognition of indigeneity, which breaks away from federal policy, but also ties back to "relations" as in recognizing non-human life as relational kin.
