Winter 2017 Film Series:
Woman with a Movie Camera: German Films by Female Directors
(Jessica Hausner, 2014)
1 hour, 36 min
"Romantic comedy" based on the famed double suicide of German Romantic poet and playwright Heinrich von Kleist and Henriette Vogel. Framed in rigid, tableaux-like fashion, the visuals are reminiscent of Vermeer paintings. Long conversations about taxes being levied on everyone, including the aristocracy, anchor the story within its specific time frame and suggest just why the sensitive characters would feel unsuited for the bourgeois high life.
Coffee and discussion will follow each screening. Open to UW students, faculty, and staff. Series curated by Jasmin Krakenberg (firstname.lastname@example.org).
