Mexican-born and UW alum artist Alfredo Arreguín has a long and distinguished list of accomplishments around the world. His prolific work portraits nature through colorful patterns and ornate symbols as a form of reflection on the relation between nature and culture.
Arreguín left his native Morelia for Mexico City at age thirteen, and then moved to Seattle in 1956. After completion of his military service in Korea, he attended the University of Washington, receiving his BA in 1967 and his MFA in 1969. As an artist, Arreguín has received many prestigious awards in both the United States and internationally, including a Humanitarian Award by the Washington State Legislature, a Governor's Arts Award from the State of Washington, Palm of the People Award at the International Festival of Painting in France, and twice a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship Grant. His work is featured in major international exhibitions. In the United States, he is honored with two paintings at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the National Academy of Sciences, both in Washington, D.C.

On a visit to his alma mater, Arreguín will give a presentation on the role that nature has played in his work. This event will also feature a silent auction of one of the artist’s most famous pieces in the nature series. Meet the artist and learn first-hand about his artistic legacy and sources of inspiration. Signed posters displaying a replica of one of his latest pieces will be available for sale on site. All proceeds will be donated to Seattle MESA.

This event is part of the UW Earth Day 50th Anniversary Celebrations that celebrates diversity within the environmental movement.
