Description | Join the Department of Human Centered Design for our spring Preliminary Exam presentations. HCDE doctoral students in their second year of the PhD program will overview their research project, discuss research methods and any results thus far, and describe how this research contributes to the field. Presentations will be about 15 minutes with time for a brief Q&A after each talk.
The Role of Narrative in Misinformation Education Games Nisha Devasia, HCDE PhD studentRapid spread of harmful misinformation has led to a dire need for effective media literacy interventions, to which educational games have been suggested as a possible solution. Researchers and educators have created several games that increase media literacy and resilience to misinformation. However, the existing body of misinformation education games is fairly limited in the variety of approaches; most focus on prebunking misinformation rather than debunking or correcting adopted misinformation, and rarely focus upon the socio-emotional influences that factor into misinformation belief. To this end, we present theoretical argumentation for a stronger emphasis on narrative in misinformation education games, and conduct a content analysis on existing media literacy games, with a focus on how the game narratives address psychological drivers of misinformation. From our analyses, we suggest a framework for designers seeking to create narrative-driven misinformation games in the future. View the full prelims schedule:
