MolES Seminar Series on Biomanufacturing
Enabling Nanomedicine: From Discovery to Commercial Production
Abstract: Nanomedicines have the potential to lead the evolution of medicine from population-based treatment to personalized therapy through the targeted delivery of drugs and diagnostics1. However, nanomedicines have been challenging and expensive to develop2. In this presentation, we will review the application of microfluidics for the rapid and cost-effective discovery, development and scale-up manufacture of novel nanomedicines designed to offer new treatment options for patients3. Examples of lipid- and polymer-based nanoparticles which have been prepared using microfluidic manufacturing technology to encapsulate and deliver small molecules4, peptides and proteins5, and nucleic acids6 will be discussed.  The development of genetic technologies that enable elucidation of the molecular origins of disease, together with the advent of smart nanoparticle materials, and the availability of novel manufacturing technologies such as those based on microfluidics, provides a platform to realize the potential of nanomedicine.
This weekly seminar brings together students, faculty and invited guests from various disciplines across campus to explore current trends in molecular engineering and nanotechnology. It is a forum for active interdisciplinary discussions. These talks are open to the public and attract a diverse audience of students and faculty.…
