Description

Molecular Engineering and Sciences Seminar Series
The Center for the Science of Synthesis Across Scales

Abstract
: The Center for the Science of Synthesis Across Scales (CSSAS) is one of 22 new Energy Frontier Research Centers that was funded in 2018 by the Basic Energy Sciences program of the US Department of Energy. With a $10.75M budget over four years, and a tightly integrated team of researchers where the strengths of the major partners - the University of Washington and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories – are complemented by expertise from the University of Chicago, the University of California San Diego, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, CSSAS aims at harnessing the complex functionality of hierarchical materials by mastering the design of high-information-content building blocks that predictively self-assemble into responsive, reconfigurable, self-healing materials, and direct the formation and organization of inorganic components. In this presentation, I will describe how CSSAS tackles this grand challenge through three inter-related thrusts. Using proteins that have been computationally designed for self-assembly as an example, I will illustrate how the center uses a common set of building blocks, hierarchy of simulations, advanced characterization, and machine learning to understand the emergence of order and evolution of hierarchy, and to access new states of matter.

This weekly seminar brings together students, faculty and invited guests from various disciplines across campus to explore current trends in molecular engineering and nanotechnology. It is a forum for active interdisciplinary discussions. These talks are open to the public and attract a diverse audience of students and faculty.
