Early Modern Bodily Objects

A plethora of new objects moulded the early modern European body, including stockings, spectacles, high heels, and the tobacco pipe. The entire category of bodily objects underwent rapid changes during the Renaissance, altering forever the imagined constitution of the body itself. This paper discusses some of these dramatic developments, as well as the rhetorical conundrum of how to convey specialized knowledge to a general audience.

Susan Gaylard is an Associate Professor in Italian Studies and an Adjunct Associate Professor in Art History at UW.
