Experience the history of art, architecture, urbanism, and cultural history in Amsterdam and other cities in Europe this summer. This 9-week study abroad opportunity will offer the study of Dutch art on-site within its cultural and historical context. While the program’s primary focus is art history in the Netherlands—with special attention to Dutch Modernism and the seventeenth-century “Golden Age”—other topics will include the contemporary art scene in Amsterdam, discussions with museum professionals, architecture, urban planning, design, and issues of Dutch identity. The program will be based in Amsterdam, branch out to different cities in the country (The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem, among others), and end in Belgium (Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent). The program will also make two excursions to Venice, Italy, and Kassel, Germany. It rarely happens that the two foremost European exhibitions of international art take place during the same summer: the bi-annual Biennale in Venice and the Documenta, which is held every five years in Kassel.

In addition to exploring the Dutch Golden Age, Vincent Van Gogh, Mondrian, Dutch Modernism, and issues related to contemporary art with the program directors, guest lecturers will guide us to the architecture, urbanism, and society in the Netherlands past and present. Students from a variety of disciplines and levels who wish to see the art and culture of the Netherlands come to life by experiencing it firsthand are encouraged to apply. There are no language requirements for this program.
