Critical Acts presents avery r. young:
avery r. young arrives as part of the Alive performance festival’s first “Critical Acts” artist-in-residence program. avery is part of a larger weeklong engagement in the Seattle-Tacoma region which includes multiple public performances, community workshops, high school classroom visits and UWB student collaborations. The artist will spend 3 consecutive days on the UWB campus offering workshops to performance and creative writing classes, give a public performance, and collaborate on short film projects with students from the Global Media Lab. young’s residency on the UWB campus will help to inspire, generate and challenge student works that may be presented during Alive 2.0 festival and the culminating showcase on May 29, 2018 in Mobius Hall. This live performance event is open to the entire campus and the public at large.

Artist Bio
avery r. young’sart speaks stories of turmoil turned to triumph.Dubbed “sunday mornin jook joint,” young merges spiritual and secular aesthetics with dramatic and comedic sensibilities. avery's sound is indoctrinated with 400+ years of the African-American experience. He melds history, culture and art, blending phonetics, linguistics, hymns, jazz and hip hop in his work. avery pays poetic homage to the Black Arts Movement from the 1960’s while his musical influences include James Brown, Nina Simone & Gil Scott Heron. By examining Black American history and culture, his artistry celebrates social justice, equity, queer identity, and body consciousness while challenging misogyny, racism and homophobia. young is a 3Arts Award winning teaching-artist, composer, and producer whose work spans many genres of music, performance, visual arts, and literature. He is a Cave Canem Fellow with poems and essays published in The BreakBeat Poets (Haymarket, 2015), The Golden Shovel Anthology: New Poems Honoring Gwendolyn Brooks (University of Arkansas Press, 2017) and In the Company of Black (Candor Arts, 2017). avery has performed in the Hip Hop Theatre Festival, Lollapalooza, WordStock and has appeared on BET, MTV, ABC and WGN’s Morning News.
