Speculative Writing Workshop with Dorothy R. Santos

Monday, May 1, 2017
North Creek Events Center, UWB

The current political state in America signals a tremendous cultural shift within the arts and humanities. With main stream media co-opting and commodifying social justice movements and radical actions to the fight for equal pay; writers, artists, and cultural producers must take the steps towards creating literature, poetry, and narratives that become inextricably linked to (American) history and creating new visual language. In particular, writing illuminates and highlights the narratives of underrepresented and marginalized people.

This writing workshop, with writer, editor, curator, and educator Dorothy R. Santos guides the participant through writing prompts, how to work with collaborators, and provides daily/weekly exercises and resources for creating a consistent writing practice. Santos is currently a fellow at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and is one of the editors-in-chief at Hyphen Magazine, a publication focused on American API issues.

This event is free and open to UWB students, faculty, and staff. It is co-sponsored by the Office of Community-Based Learning and Research, and Culture, Literature and the Arts at UW Bothell.
