| | Description | Please join us for the May Research Seminar Series! There will be a Q&A and discussion following the presentations. - "Monitoring and Evaluating a National HIV Testing Program With Innovative Technology: Scanform Roll-Out In Malawi"
Presenter: Andreas Jahn, MBBS, PhD, MSc, Clinical Epidemiologist; Senior Technical Advisor, I-TECH Malawi
Presentation Description: Dr. Jahn will present Malawi's experience of rolling out ScanForm with the Malawi Ministry of Health. Monitoring and quality assurance of the integrated testing program for HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis in Malawi and similar settings is challenging due to the large scale, the many peripheral delivery points, and the complexity of protocols. ScanForm is an innovative technology that can digitize paper forms from a smartphone picture using artificial intelligence algorithms with surprising speed and accuracy. Presenter Bio: Andreas Jahn, MBBS, PhD, MSc is a clinical epidemiologist with 24 years of working experience in Africa, primarily in HIV. He is a proud member of the I-TECH family since 2006. Dr. Jahn has published over 130 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including the first evidence globally for a population-level impact of antiretroviral (ART) roll-out on adult mortality (The Lancet, 2008). As of October 2023, his publications have received 3,610 citations and his h-index on Scopus stands at 32. He has profoundly contributed to the National ART/PMTCT Program in Malawi, which is widely recognized for its innovative strategic information systems and robust service data in resource-limited settings. He continues to shape national and international HIV programs and policy with innovative monitoring systems and initiatives such as Option B+ for PMTCT, which was adopted as a global recommendation by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2013. He has also contributed as an external expert on the WHO clinical HIV guideline development committee since 2012 (full bio). - “The DASH Study: Rapid Diagnostic Testing for Access to Self-Care & Health Services”
Presenter: Paul Drain, MD, MPH, FIDSA - Associate Professor, UW Depts. of Global Health, Medicine & Epidemiology; Director of Clinical Research, International Clinical Research Center; Director of Clinical and Translational Core, SEA-TRAC
Presentation Description: Dr. Drain will present on the DASH Study: Rapid Diagnostic Testing for Access to Self-Care & Health Services, which aims to develop and evaluate an integrated self-care rapid diagnostic testing package(s) for both infectious and chronic non-communicable diseases in resource-limited settings. Dr. Drain’s research group focuses on the development, evaluation and implementation of diagnostic testing and clinic-based screening, including novel point-of-care technologies, to improve clinical care and patient-centered outcomes for tuberculosis and HIV in resource-limited settings. Presenter Bio: Paul Drain, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Global Health, Medicine (Infectious Diseases), and Epidemiology at the University of Washington (UW). He is the Director of Clinical and Translational Research at the International Center for Clinical Research (ICRC) and the Director of the UW Clinical and Translational Science Core within the Tuberculosis Research Advancement Center (SEA-TRAC). His research has been supported by several institutes of the National Institutes of Health, the Infectious Disease Society of America, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Department of Defense, the NIH Center for AIDS Research, as well as several corporations. He has authored several global health books and received awards from the Global Health Education Consortium, the Infectious Disease Society of America, and a Faculty Teaching Award from Harvard Medical School (full bio).
