Metabolism of Aging in Mice and Monkeys

Aging is associated with increased vulnerability to a host of diseases and conditions, each with independent etiology and investigated as discrete disciplines within biomedical research. A change in metabolism is a unifying theme among age-related disorders including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiovascular disease. Caloric restriction, a highly effective intervention to delay aging and the onset of age-related disease, has a profound impact on metabolism that may be causal in its pro-survival and health promoting effects. This seminar will describe the metabolism of aging in mice and monkeys at the tissue and system level and the impact of caloric restriction on metabolism and pathways linked to aging.
