Description

“Follow the Money: The Role of Science in the Federal Budget Process”

Dr. Nicholas Montoni – Congressional Science Fellow, American Institute of Physics/AAAS

What is the most pressing policy issue facing scientists? How do scientists contribute their knowledge to the policy-making process? How can aspiring scientists engage with policy decisions? To answer those questions, Dr. Montoni will discuss his fellowship efforts working on congressional appropriations. All are welcome to hear Nick's story threading the needle of science, activism, and advocacy to establish a career working in public science policy.

UW Chemistry alumnus Nick Montoni (Ph.D. ’18) spent 2019-20 as an AIP Congressional Science Fellow, where he served as a special legislative assistant for Representative David Price (D–NC).

At the UW, Nick explored the light-harvesting properties of metals at small scales for applications in renewable energy, cancer treatment, and information storage. He was a CEI Education & Training Fellow, a Pacific Science Center Science Communication Fellow, and the founder of the UW chapter of Out in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (oSTEM). He is passionate about science communication and stand-up comedy.
