Want to Build a Startup? Why Everyone Has the Tools and Tech for Success

The good news: if you have a vision for a startup, there are tools and technology readily available that can support your growth. In this talk Avni Patel Thompson will share valuable resources on everything from business planning to funding to scaling. Now, the bad news: tools and tech alone can’t come up with the big idea. That’s up to you. To be ultimately successful, your product or service must solve a real and persistent problem. Avni will offer strategies for evaluating your solution so that you can build your startup with confidence.

  • Key resources for building a startup
  • Vetting your big idea
  • Positioning your business

Avni Patel Thompson

Avni Patel Thompson is an entrepreneur and writer currently working on building parents their modern village. She was formerly the founder and CEO of Poppy, a startup whose mission was to build busy parents a safety net by connecting them to talented, vetted caregivers when they had gaps in childcare. Her background is in building consumer products that solve everyday frictions which she did in roles at Procter & Gamble, BCG, adidas and Starbucks. Avni has a BSc Chemistry from UBC and an MBA with honors from Harvard Business School. When she’s not scheming about building new products, you’ll find her having a dance party with her 2 girls, curled up with a book or writing about her observations at or on Twitter: @apatelthompson.

Fundamentals for Startups is a weekly one-hour lecture series featuring notable experts who share startup-related information, experience, and insights with our entrepreneurial community. From raising capital to scaling to exit strategies, these seasoned guest speakers deliver valuable content designed to help startups and entrepreneurs thrive. Lectures are typically 30-40 mins, followed by open Q&A.

Each lecture is filmed, live streamed and archived on CoMotion’s Startup Training Videos page.

Light refreshments will be served. These lectures are open to the public and you do not have to be currently affiliated with the UW or a startup to join. We hope to see you there!…
