Wilding: Returning Nature to Our Farm tells the amazing story of the daring wildlife experiment of Isabella Tree and her husband conservationist, Sir Charles Burrell: the rewilding of their 3,500-acre family estate, Knepp Castle. Forced to accept that intensive farming on the clay soil was not working, they decided to step back and let nature take over. By introducing free-roaming herbivores – proxies of large animals that once roamed Britain— their degraded agricultural land became a functioning ecosystem again. In less than 20 years wildlife has rocketed and many endangered species have returned to Knepp. Soils are now providing benefits for the public good: filtering and purifying natural water sources, mitigating against floods, and capturing carbon. The Knepp experience challenges conventional ideas about our past and present landscape, and points the way to a wilder, richer future.
