Description

Taking the leap: bootstrapping a startup in the genomics market

Ivan did his postdoctoral work in the Dept of Genome Sciences at UW. After two decades of academic research and zero business experience he decided to commercialize a promising method that had the potential to benefit genomic research and clinical applications. In 2015 he founded Phase Genomics and has since led it as CEO and Chief Scientist. Phase Genomics uses proximity-ligation technology to facilitate discovery in genome assembly, metagenomics, and oncology research. Ivan has recruited a diverse team including scientists, software developers, business and marketing specialists and has led the company to a revenue positive state with minimum outside investment. He advises new startups on everything from recruiting and strategy to marketing and sales (and sometimes even science).  Ivan will talk about the process of turning an academic research project into a commercially useful technology.

This seminar series is only possible because of generous support from the UW Departments of:
Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biomedical Informatics & Medical Education, Genome Sciences, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology and Biophysics, the Office of Research and Graduate Education, the Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant, the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program, the Graduate Program in Neurobiology & Behavior, and the Graduate School. Thank You!
