Description

6 Mondays, March 11-April 15 plus 2 field trips on Mar. 30 and Apr. 20

This course is designed for students who want to develop basic field identification skills and gain experience using the keys in the new 2nd edition of Hitchcock and Cronquist's "Flora of the Pacific Northwest." Over the six-week course students will learn how to recognize approximately 25 of the most common plant families found in Washington. Emphasis is placed on learning the combination of vegetative (leaf and stem) and flower characters that are unique to each family. Class time is spent learning basic terminology needed for plant identification and keying out local native and introduced species using a combination of dissecting microscopes, an introductory text for identifying plant families, and "Flora of the Pacific Northwest". Copies of "Flora of the Pacific Northwest" are available in the classroom for students to use.
