Description

Title: Chinese Buddhist Canon in Formation: The Transmission of Indian Buddhist Texts in Early Medieval China

Date: Friday, May 18th
Location: HUB 337
Speaker: Fei Zhao

Details: This talk will introduce how Buddhist texts were transmitted to early Medieval China via the Silk Road and how these texts were translated into Chinese. We will discuss the pioneer translators, their works and translation methods. Their texts formed the core of the Chinese Buddhist Canon, which in turn became the foundation of East Asian Buddhism.

The reception of Indian Buddhism in China was initiated by the introduction of Buddhist belief to the Chinese audiences and the translation of Indian Buddhist texts into Chinese in early Medieval China.
