View selections from the the East Asia Library's Korean Manhwa graphic novel collection from the mid-1980s to early 2000s. Works by Korean graphic novelists such as Yi Hyon-se, Ho Yong-man, Pak Pong-song, Yi Sang-mu are among this collection of over 18,000 volumes. The exhibit is presented as a Manhwa Bang(만화방) or “Comic Room," popular in Korea in the 1960s as public places to read or rent comics or graphic novels. Patrons would pay a small fee to spend time browsing and reading in a space with comfortable furniture and food. It was also a space where fellow enthusiasts could talk about their favorite comic books or share recommendations. These spaces faded from the scene as the internet increased access to information and entertainment. |
